Chapter 15

He pulled me over to the bed again, this time moving to sit on the edge. His side pressed to mine, our fingers twined as he stayed quiet and let me take the lead.

Which would be great if I knew where to start.

On the one hand, I knew where I wanted this to go, but that still left the ‘how do we get there?’ Leaning further into his side, reveling in the comforting stability he provided, I let out a long sigh.

“I don’t know what to say. I came here wanting to talk about this, and now all the words are gone,” I said, frustration coming back as I tried and failed to say what I wanted to. Thankfully, Ron didn’t seem to mind.

Bringing our hands up to his mouth, he kissed the back, the pressure light as he spoke. “Can’t say I’m much better with them, but I’ll give it a go.” Dropping our hands, he shifted to face me head on.

“I’d say it’s safe to assume you want a relationship, right? Dates, cuddling, the whole nine yards?” he asked, eyes open and his frame relaxed as I nodded. With him asking the questions, it was easier.

Squeezing his hand, I answered, “Right. I can’t do friends with benefits or one-night stands. I never was the sort, and now I really can’t. Besides…” I trailed off, uncertain about how he’d react to the next bit. When he only stared at me, waiting patiently for the rest, I continued, “Something tells me that I won’t want to share you, if we start something.”

The words settled in the air like a heavy blanket, Ron’s mouth curling into a wide smile as he nodded. “That’s perfectly fine because I feel the same way. While I’ll admit to occasionally having casual sex, I wouldn’t be able to do that with you. Even if you wanted to. For one, you deserve better and I fully plan to give it to you. For two…”

He leaned forward, resting our foreheads together as he continued. “I would never be able to walk away from you. Whatever it is we’re building here? I’m all in. Are you?”

A knot formed in my throat at the intensity behind his stare, my stomach rolling with nerves even as warmth filled like a balloon in my chest. This was more than I’d hoped for and I didn’t hesitate to agree.

“Yeah, I’m all in, but before we get into this there are things you need to know.” I hated bringing it up, but it was better he knew everything from the start. It’d hurt less if he walked away now than later.

Ron nodded, shifting back to give me space but not moving the hand still curled around mine. He didn’t say anything, once again giving me the lead as I bit my lip and chose my words carefully.

“You already know I can’t do certain things, and to be honest I don’t know when I’ll ever be able to. I’d like to think it won’t take years, but then things like what just happened pop up…” And my confidence shrivels.
